Sang-Wha Sien

I am a Human-Computer Interaction researcher and PhD Candidate in University of British Columbia's Computer Science department. I am supervised by Joanna McGrenere in the eDAPT Lab.

My research sits at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), inclusive design, and health informatics, with a focus on addressing the needs of culturally and socially diverse user populations. I investigate how community-centered design and AI technology can more equitably support engagement, communication, and well-being, particularly in mental health and social computing contexts. My current work explores how cultural frameworks shape online interactions and problem-solving behaviors. Drawing on qualitative and mixed methods, I develop and evaluate novel systems that are both empirically grounded and contextually sensitive. I work closely with multidisciplinary teams to advance user-centered, culturally responsive design in HCI.
